Pick up after your dog or risk causing blindness in a child!!!

We are getting increasingly concerned about the amount of dog poo which we are increasingly seeing in our streets and open spaces. Unfortunately, there is a small minority of irresponsible dog owners who still refuse to pick up after their dogs. Dogs mess is not only unpleasant and smelly but much more seriously it does pose a significant health hazard. Dogs poo can contain a dangerous parasitic roundworm known as Toxacara Canis which can infect and cause blindness in childen. This risk is totally eradicated if all dog owners act in a responsible manner and pick up their dog’s poo and dispose of it responsibly. It is also extremely important for dogs to be wormed regularly to kill the worms before they can endanger children. It is also wise not to exercise dogs in dedicated children’s play area. Is this really too much to ask to protect the health and wellbeing of our children? So please pick up after your dog. Rats or Water Voles?

An interesting twist to the Eco-Clean project has emerged. A pest control firm employed by Tesco was brought in to address a rat problem in the leat area. Although a number of rats have been spotted and these are being dealt with by the pest control man, he has however advised that some of the ratty characters in the area may not be vermin as we had originally thought but water voles!! Water voles were declared extinct in Cornwall in 1988 having been eradicated by the rising American minx population, a savage preditor. This would be fantastic news if true and is currently being checked out by members of the mammal group affiliated to the Cornwall Widlife Trust.

Could it be possible that this precious, indigenous mammal has indeed survived the onslaught of the American minx in this suburban environment? We will keep you all updated on this latest development. We would appreciate knowing if any other people have spotted these special characters in the area. Interestingly the population of water voles in the UK has dropped from an estimated population of 10,000,000 to a current population of 2,000,000.

Cllr Graeme Hicks and Owen Braines of Community Assisted Projects meet the Keep Britain Tidy Team

Cllr Graeme Hicks and Owen Braines travelled to Exeter today to record a voice over for the Redruth Brewery Leats presentation video, which will be shown at the Keep Britain Tidy national award night in Bournemouth, on the 14th of March. Hopefully we have done a reasonable job, but trying to condense the achievements of this project into a one and a half minute recording proved to be challenging to say the least. However, the Keep Britain Tidy team were extremely helpful and patient so we really are optimistic that the presentation will look good on the night. We have already accomplished a remarkable achievement just to reach the national finals, but hey, wouldn’t it be fantastic for our town to actually win this national accolade.

We remain committed and hopeful, but whatever the outcome on the 14th we are determined, come what may, to forge ahead and keep the momentum going for further environmental improvements in our town. Cornwall rightly promotes itself as the clean green peninsula, lets all commit ourselves to keeping it that way!

Contract Signs Produce 70 Litter Bin Stickers for the Eco-Clean Project

Contract Signs of Redruth have kindly produced, completely free of charge 70 stickers which will soon be attached to all the litter bins in the Redruth area. The stickers display the Eco-Clean logo which was designed by Amber Caley of Redruth School and contains the strap line, “Bin it don’t Sling it’ which was chosen by Members of Redruth Youth Centre. We hope very much that these new stickers, which carry an attractive modern design and message will help to change peoples attitudes towards responsibly disposing of their litter.

This further demonstrates the commitment to spread the good practise developed at the Redruth Brewery Leats to benefit the whole of Redruth. The Redruth Brewery Leats Community Eco-Clean Project is short listed for the Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards!

We are delighted to confirm that the Redruth Brewery Leats Community Eco-Clean Project has indeed reached the final of the Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards. The annual presentation will take place at the annual Keep Britain Tidy Network Conference which is to be held in Bournemouth in March. This year there are four categories. The Eco-Clean project has been shortlisted in the Community Award category along with two other local authority projects.

Fiona Ashurst from Keep Britain Tidy said, “The Redruth Brewery Leats Project is an excellent example of what can be achieved through local people working together to improve the quality of their local communities.

We are delighted to hear of the wonderful efforts of everyone involved in the project in bringing about a huge environmental improvement to the area. Taking pride in the places where we live, work and play is essential in helping to create cleaner and greener places for us all to enjoy.”

The First of the Newly Designed Litter Bin Stickers appear at the Leats!

We have today fixed the new stickers to the litter bins at the Redruth Brewery Leats. The stickers have kindly been designed and supplied to us free of charge by Contract Signs of Redruth. The stickers incorporate the logo, so professionally designed by Amber Calley of Redruth School. Jane Hooper, of Hooper Graphics has kindly digitally enhanced Amber’s original drawing and we sincerely hope Amber will be pleased with the final result. The strap line “Bin it don’t Sling it” was chosen by Members of Redruth Youth Centre. We are extremely pleased with the finished product and hope very much that people will take notice of them and make an extra effort to ensure any rubbish is disposed of responsibly. We would wish to extend our thanks to Amber and the young people at the Youth Centre for their recent efforts. We have ordered a further 20 litter bin stickers and it is our intention to fix them to more bins in Redruth. We would very much welcome your comments.

Tesco PLC Chairman reacts positively

Cllr Hicks wrote recently to the Chairman of Tesco PLC regarding his concerns with the amount of Tesco derived litter that has been so prevalent in the Redruth Brewery Leats area. He sent a letter containing a cd with 60 photographs showing the extent of the problem. It appears that his original letter never got delivered, but after a further reminder Cllr Hicks is pleased to have received a response. The Chairman of Tesco PLC, Mr David Reid has responded very positively and there is now little doubt that Tesco is spending considerably more time and effort in ensuring the Redruth Brewery Leats area is kept clear of unwelcome litter.

We would like to offer Tesco a special thanks for reacting in this manner and for taking their social responsibilities seriously and contributing in a very positive way to the cleanliness of the area.

Redruth School Students Erect Nesting Boxes

The Students at Redruth School have been busy getting involved in the Redruth Brewery Leats Eco-Clean Project. They have been working hard constructing wooden bird boxes. These have now been erected by the students in various locations along the wooded area. Hopefully these nesting boxes will become homes for some small birds in the near future. A big congratulations to the Students of Redruth School for this latest contribution to the project.

It is intended in the new year to erect an historic interpretation panel which will include a historical write up by local histrorian Michael Tangye. It is intended to put the new Eco-Clean logo on the interpretation panel which was designed by Amber Caley, a student of Redruth School.

The new slogan chosen by Members of the Redruth Youth Club “Bin it don’t Sling it” will be soon attached to the litter bins along with the new logo.

Keep Britain Tidy National Awards!!

The Redruth Brewery Leats Community Eco-Clean project has been short listed for a national award in the communities category. We will have more details shortly, but this is a real achievement and the fact that we have been short listed demonstrates how well the project has successfully progressed. We have demonstrated how great results can be achieved if the general public, Police, businesses, the voluntary sector, local authorities, schools and youth clubs work together in partnership to solve local issues.
